
Monitoring students as they learn to read
About the presentation
Reading is an extremely important skill that enables participation and autonomy in society and has a significant impact on both academic and personal life, as well as on the development of a nation. Although global research provides data that allow us to predict the progression of reading acquisition throughout the school years, Brazil still shows a surprising lack of investment in research and technologies focused on this area. The presentation will discuss effective strategies to monitor student level reading proficiency and gaps throughout Luciana’s experience working with Brazilian districts, including the partnership with Stanford.
About Luciana
Luciana Mendonça Alves is a speech-language-hearing pathologist and a professor at the Medical School of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil. She holds a PhD and an MSc in Linguistics from UFMG and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Laboratoire Parole et Langage (LPL), CNRS – Aix-Marseille Université, France.
