About the presentation
We used matched administrative data to link individuals’ school and labor-market records from two Brazilian states and then related cognitive skills, as measured by state test scores and educational attainment, for the 2010 cohort of 12th graders to their 2019 formal-sector wages, controlling for student demographics, job characteristics, and firm attributes. We find that the returns to cognitive skills in Brazil are comparable to those estimated for other countries, suggesting that they are likely important predictors of productivity. However, returns vary substantially by state and by sector, firm size, and type of job. Overall, cognitive skills are associated with higher earnings, but local labor-market structure shapes the payoff to these skills.
