Freire’s  leadership in São Paulo’s Secretary of Education

About the presentation:

Dr. Wong's presentation will focus on a central initiative - the Interdisciplinary Project - of Paulo Freire's tenure as Municipal Secretary of Education for the city of São Paulo and the relationship between building and sustaining an effective teacher corps and maintaining a robust democracy.

About Pia:

Pia Lindquist Wong, Ph.D. is a Professor and Interim Faculty Director of the Innovation Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Education in the College of Education at Sacramento State University. Pia has taught courses in multicultural education, critical pedagogy and educational research. She has also served in various leadership roles, including Teaching Credentials Department Chair and Associate Dean for Research and Engagement. Her research focuses on urban professional development schools, teacher practices in the context of urban school reform and democratic education, and democratic educational reforms in Brazil. A frequent speaker at national conferences, she has published Education and Democracy: Paulo Freire, Education Reform and Social Movements (1998) co-authored with Maria Pilar O’Cadiz and Carlos Alberto Torres, and numerous articles in journals such as Comparative Education Review, Teacher Education Quarterly, and Journal of Educational Policy. Dr. Wong received a B.A. with Honors in Latin American Studies and an M.A. in City Planning from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in International Development Education from Stanford University. Pia is a contributor to the Lemann Center’s PED Brasil project since 2017.
