School Preferences and School Choice: Families preferences for high schools in Brazil

Brazilian state governments have invested in new high school options, such as full-day and vocational school options across states. This investment reshaped the choice of many families. Although the topic of school preferences has been explored in other contexts, there is a lack of evidence for Brazil. This paper aims to contribute to this discussion and presents evidence that families are more likely to choose vocational and full-day schools than regular state schools. Families also prefer high schools that are near to their previous middle and with good academic records. The result is heterogeneous according to the type of students. Students that are not in the correct grade for their age, for example, are more likely to be indifferent between dropout and attending schools regarding high school academic records.
