Designing world-class STEM learning in Brazil: the Sobral Project
Paulo Blikstein, Tatiana Hochgreb, Cassia Fernandes
STEM Education has changed dramatically in the last 10 years, with the Next Generation Science Standards in the US (and other similar policy documents in other countries), the growth of the maker movement and coding in schools, and new societal demands. In this talk, we will present a project in the city of Sobral, Brazil, that intends to revamp science education in the city`s schools, by simultaneously rewriting the science curriculum, building new science/maker labs in all schools, and promoting innovative programs for teacher professional development. We will present our project design, initial observations from the two pilot schools, and discuss the relevance of this project to STEM education in developing countries.
