Intersectional Inequities Index: Applications for Measuring Educational Quality with Equity in Brazil

Quarter:
Winter 2024
We introduced the Intersectional Inequities Index (III), capable of capturing inequities in educational results according to an arbitrary number of comparisons -- e.g., according to dimensions of gender, race/color, socioeconomic level and disabilities -- in a single indicator. We compute the III for reading proficiency among 2nd year students assessed between August and October 2023 by Equidade.info, document levels and trends from III to schools, for 5 states and for Brazil. We also defined the Quality with Equity (IQE) index – which penalizes proficiency, a pedagogical criterion, for intersectional inequities in different parts of the performance distribution – and we compute IQE levels and trends for schools, states and Brazil using the same data.
